RATIONALE

Basically, alternative schools and programs operate in a range of mission and target populations. Some Alternative Learning Programs enroll special populations of students because of academic, attendance, and substance abuse problems.

MISSION

Alternative learning programs and schools assist students in becoming self-directed learners and community contributors by providing a safe, supportive, caring learning environment.

GOAL

Alternative Learning Programs and Schools are committed to helping students to become autonomous learners, critical thinkers, and community contributors:

• Addressing the learning needs of the whole child through challenging, developmentally appropriate curriculum;



• Identifying and enhancing the strengths of every student through active, personalized, authentic learning activities which honor individual students' interests, choices, and goals; and



• Maintaining high academic and behavioral expectations for all students in a safe, supportive, caring learning environment.
