Brief Description: 12075 • Light the Way: Exploring the Lighthouses of the Outer Banks
Discover the lighthouses of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Lighthouses have played a crucial role on the Outer Banks for hundreds of years especially in the treacherous region known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Analyze how North Carolina’s geography influenced the location of these landmarks and how the role and operation of lighthouses have changed over time. How have these inspirational beacons served as metaphors in literature, music, and life? Explore the life and times of lighthouse keepers, their families, and their communities. There is something for every educator in this seminar as we explore light characteristics and lenses, architecture and engineering, and history and literature. Excursions to several lighthouses will provide opportunities to write, paint, photograph, and reflect. Be enlightened by the power, strength, and serenity of these national treasures..
