Brief Description: 12050 • Place of Refuge: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Join us on day hikes with a naturalist as we explore one of the world’s richest reserves of biological diversity, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Deep forests, massive geologic formations, and clear tumbling streams lend themselves to opportunities for exploration, reflective writing, and photography. Many of our pioneering ancestors saw the western North Carolina mountains as obstacles in their path to a more hospitable land. Others purposefully sought out this isolated and rugged mountain environment as a destination, recognizing its power as a place of refuge. Follow their footsteps to the land of the Great Smokies and study the lives of those who helped preserve this area for future generations as a national park. Investigate the work of two of these visionaries through the writings of Horace Kephart in Our Southern Highlanders and through the few remaining photographs of the mysterious George Masa. Experience the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as your own place of refuge.
