Brief Description: 12035 • From Moonshine to Fine Wine: Economics, History, and Change in North Carolina
North Carolina has long relied upon the agricultural industry as one of the major forces of its economy. Over the years, the crops cultivated and the products created from those crops have changed with the state’s evolving demographics, tastes, and market realities. In this seminar, we will study the economics related to the new economies of tourism, film, and different agricultural products in North Carolina. Learn about the underground economy generated from the backcountry production of “moonshine” in the past, about the decline of the tobacco industry, and about the burgeoning new economic realities in North Carolina. We will explore history, economics, chemistry, and more as we talk with experts and go behind the scenes at farms, in kitchens, in hotels, in wineries, in artists’ studios, and at film locations in western North Carolina. This is an excellent opportunity for teachers to think about how their classroom practices relate to the realities of the present and to future career paths for their students.
