Brief Description: 11985 • Grappling with History: The Trail of Tears
Don’t just learn history; do history. Prowl museums, sift through old documents, and stalk the Internet for clues as we piece together the story of the Cherokee Removal. During the 1830s, a complex series of events led the United States government to force most of the Cherokee people out of their ancient homeland in the southern Appalachians. Countless people died on this forced relocation to present-day Oklahoma. The long journey is remembered as The Trail of Tears, in the Cherokee language, Nunna daul Isunyi. Visit sites where the betrayal of the Cherokee was played out. Study the ways in which language was used to obscure the truth about government actions toward the Cherokee, just as “officialese” today can be used to obscure atrocities. Investigate ways to find and use primary documents to enrich classroom learning. Explore this tragic history as we seek a better understanding of the tangle of greed, bureaucracy, and circumstance that led to the Removal.
