Brief Description: 11975 • Exploring the Landscape through Art and Writing
For centuries, artists and writers have called upon the beauty and abundance of nature to inspire their creative muse. It was William Shakespeare who proclaimed, “One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.” During our week together we will venture outdoors to connect with the beauty of the Appalachian Mountain landscape and capture its essence in writing and nature journaling. Discover the many colors, textures, forms, and patterns of nature while learning creative ways to describe and illustrate what we think, see, and feel. Join us on day hikes as we explore one of the world’s richest reserves of biological diversity. Mountain meadows and seemingly endless vistas provide opportunities for reflective writing and journaling. Develop strategies for using the outdoors as a classroom to sharpen inquiry skills, spark student curiosity, and discuss timely concepts. Blending the literary style of a writer with the keen observation of a naturalist and the creative skills of an artist, we will learn to look at the world with new eyes.
