Brief Description: 12155 • Teaching with Confidence in Diverse Classrooms
November 8–12: Cullowhee
Imagine what it would be like to step into a foreign classroom where you didn’t understand the language, rules, routines, or expected behavior. Twenty-first century classrooms are brimming with diversity, culturally and linguistically, and teaching these students can challenge even the most seasoned educator. Diverse student populations with their blend of cultures, traditions, and family values require new strategies for teachers. During our week together we will deepen our understanding of cultural competency, and learn skills to allow teachers to effectively and appropriately communicate with all students. Teachers are an important bridge to ensuring that each student feels welcome in the classroom, and the first step to achieving this goal is to develop cultural awareness. Explore the rich dynamics of cross-cultural interactions and gain knowledge and tools to increase your effectiveness in relating across cultural differences. Return to your classroom better prepared to teach with confidence in culturally diverse classrooms.
