Brief Description: 12165 • And the Beat Goes On: The Rhythm of Learning
Humans are surrounded by rhythm. It is the first thing we hear—the beat of our mother’s heart. The natural world, too, is stitched together by regularly recurring pulses of energy. We call these patterns rhythms. Rhythmic cadences range from the tiny oscillations of electrons to the immense tidal flows of glaciers. Somewhere in the middle are meters on the human scale: the beating of our heart, the in-and-out flow of our breath, the up-and-down patterns of the diurnal cycle. Human beings have responded to these natural rhythms by creating rhythmic traditions of music, dance, drumming, poetry, and visual pattern. Rhythm facilitates learning. It serves as an aid to memory, articulation, and motor skills, as well as being an integral part of what is studied in poetry, pattern, music, and the sciences. Grammy award-winning storyteller and musician David Holt will be our guide on this rhythmic journey. Slap up, then down, then slide your arms as you perform hambone rhythms collected from musicians across time. Use everyday objects such as paper bags, teaspoons, and other common items to create rhythms that you can share with your students. Discover ways to harness your students’ energy by developing their repertoire of music and rhythm from cultures around the world..
