Brief Description: 12185 • Visual Journal: Where the Image Meets the Word
November 15–19: Cullowhee
Part sketchbook, part scrapbook, and part diary, the visual journal can be a vessel for self-exploration and an art form for self-expression. Discover the creative possibilities of this mixed-media format as we record our waking and dreaming lives. Experiment with different media, techniques, concepts, and exercises to prime the pump of our creativity. Collaborate with your colleagues in considering the possibilities of the visual journal in the classroom, the studio, and the reflective life. Survey how other creative souls have used visual journaling as a way to think on paper, as we look at the work of cultural exemplars like Leonardo da Vinci, Frida Kahlo, Dan Eldon, Teesha Moore, and Sabrina Ward Harrison. Even the art-phobic or writing-phobic will find there is room for their imagination to stretch out in the pages of their own visual journal. Once we experience the adventure and freedom of visual journaling ourselves, we will feel confident and enthusiastic about bringing the process into the classroom where it will serve as a connecting point for thoughts, feelings, images, and the written word for our students. No previous experience in art or writing is required, just a willingness to explore, create, and share.
