Brief Description: 12210 • Best Practices for Motivating African American Students
December 1–5: Cullowhee
How can we best encourage, educate, and lift the spirits of our African American students? North Carolina has a dedicated initiative to close the academic achievement gap. How do we accomplish this goal in a world that frequently offers our African American students limited resources, limited access, and limited expectations? Explore underlying factors that contribute to the gap, such as socioeconomic status, gender, and culture. Learn how you can be part of the solution during this week of exploring the most effective strategies for motivating African American students. Work collaboratively with other educators and seminar faculty to identify needs and develop strategies to close the gap in your school and community. Registration for this seminar is open to teams of two members from the same school—a classroom teacher and a principal, assistant principal, school counselor, or school social worker. Return to your school with the courage to inspire and empower your colleagues, your students, and your community.
