Brief Description: 12230 • The Biltmore House: Its People and Impact
December 1–5: Cullowhee
Enchanted by the majesty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, George Washington Vanderbilt selected Asheville for the site of his country estate in the late nineteenth century. Patterned after the chateaus of France’s Loire Valley, the Biltmore House and surrounding gardens came to encompass nearly 125,000 acres. Join us as we explore the development of the Biltmore Estate and trace its far-reaching social, economic, and cultural effects on North Carolina’s history and heritage. Learn how architects Richard Morris Hunt and Frederick Law Olmsted brought George Vanderbilt’s vision of a working estate to fruition in only six years. Examine the Vanderbilt’s art and antique collections and discuss how they reflect the cultural and social mores of the Gilded Age in American history. Trace the influence of the Biltmore Estate and the Vanderbilt family on the history and economy of North Carolina in the past century and learn how it continues to have an economic impact today.
