Brief Description: Come explore how the world of children’s literature can serve as an excellent resource for teaching writing. In this interdisciplinary approach to teaching writing, we will read, discuss, and critique books written for children. As a basis for our writing exercises, discover a wide variety of multicultural children’s books ranging from early childhood through young adult literature. Reading books about people from other cultures has proven to have positive developmental impact on children of all backgrounds. In addition to increasing students’ self esteem and making children feel a part of the larger society, these texts serve as prompts to inspire and help our students write more effectively. We will learn how various authors select what they will write about and what gives meaning to their work. Come experience the power and delight of children’s literature as an excellent tool for honing our students’ writing skills.
