Brief Description: 12250 • Narrative Images: Storytelling in the Age of New Media
December 6–10: Cullowhee
We define our world with narrative images. Film, television, and advertising present us with an interpretation of our world that becomes woven into our personal stories. More than ever before, people are combining words and images to relate their stories. The Internet has democratized publishing to a level where everyone can express themselves in a public forum. With fewer barriers and borders, these stories can connect diverse cultures and reveal previously unseen connections between human beings. While blogs and social media are technologies that bring together creative writing and design in ways that may seem new, in fact they rely on visual storytelling principles as ancient as written language. This seminar will focus on using both digital technology and traditional materials to explore and interpret forms of new media and sequential art narratives. Enrich your understanding of storytelling and learn new techniques for self-expression that reaffirm your abilities as a participant in an essentially creative, image-driven world.
