Event Dates: 1/31/2010 through 2/4/2010
Brief Description: There is a strong and vibrant tradition of oral history through storytelling that is alive and well in North Carolina. From the mountains to the coast, across all cultures, storytellers weave tales of real people, historical events, and powerful human emotions into unique blends of fiction and nonfiction. This seminar will focus on true-life storytelling. Learn to tell and write stories from our own lives, history, and the world around us—skills we can take back to our classrooms. Storytelling provides a natural way to bridge the gap between cultures by revealing the beauty and complexity of our diverse heritages. It can serve as a powerful vehicle to help reluctant writers put their stories into print. Storytelling promotes self-examination and encourages critical interpretation and evaluation of personal experience. Led by David Holt, Grammy award-winning storyteller and performer, we will share a unique week of honing our storytelling skills and discovering North Carolina lore through its rich oral history. “Registration begins September 29, 2009.”
