Brief Description: Learn about developmental disabilities and how they impact the students in our classrooms. Investigate types of differentiated instruction and strategies that are successful in meeting the needs of children with developmental disabilities. A developmental disability is a term used to describe lifelong disabilities attributed to intellectual, emotional, and/or physical impairments, manifested prior to twenty-two years of age. Some of these disabilities include autism, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, muscular dystrophy, deafness, blindness, and spina bifida. At each stage of a child’s development, these disabilities may result in a wide range of physical, behavioral, and cognitive limitations. We will identify the characteristics and symptoms of several developmental disabilities and evaluate their influence on student achievement in the classroom. Through case studies and in-depth discussion of teachers’ experiences, we will analyze psychosocial reactions to persons with disabilities and evaluate solutions for meeting the needs of children with developmental disabilities. “Registration begins September 29, 2009.”
