Event Dates: 4/6/2010 through 4/10/2010
Brief Description: They called her unsinkable—the ship of dreams. The most technologically advanced and luxurious ocean liner of her day, the Titanic, departed Southampton, England on her maiden voyage. Four days later on the night of April 14, 1912, the ship collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic and the unsinkable ship sank in less than three hours. Why study the Titanic? Almost a century later, what lessons about leadership, communication, and survival can be learned from the history, testimonies, and artifacts of this famous vessel? A maritime historian will guide our exploration of the historical significance of the Titanic. How does this ship serve as a time capsule revealing information about society in the early 1900s? How did a person’s social status determine their chance of survival? Research from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution gives insight into the demise of the Titanic. What long-term implications influenced ship design, maritime practices, and seafaring culture? This seminar piques the natural curiosity that many of us have about solving mysteries. Find applications to all areas of the curriculum, including math and science as we examine the ship’s dimensions and weight, and build a scale model of the Titanic. Registration begins September 29, 2009.”
