Brief Description: Today, African American males are employed in top-level jobs in government and corporate America. However, statistics tell us that nearly one-half of the African American male population (ages 18–29) in the United States is either unemployed or underemployed. Studies reveal that there are more African American males in the criminal justice system than in schools, colleges, or technical training. Homicide and AIDS are leading causes of death, and suicide rates have risen sharply. Explore the dilemmas faced by African American males in our public schools. Are our classrooms not meeting the needs of these students or are these young men disdaining academic achievement as acting white? Does popular culture reinforce negative images as seen on television and in movies? Seemingly forgotten are those who excel in school, work hard, obey the law, and contribute positively to the fabric of American culture. Discover the positive steps being taken by individuals, schools, churches, and communities. Discuss strategies that provide hope, opportunities, skills, and support in closing the achievement gap. In a collegial environment, begin to develop a plan to meet some of the needs of African American males in your school. "Registration begins September 29, 2009.”
