“Crafting Freedom: Black Artisans, Entrepreneurs and Abolitionists of the Antebellum Upper South” is an National Endowment for the Humanities sponsored "Landmarks of American History and Culture" workshop. Classroom teachers (K-12), media specialists, administrators, substitute teachers and others are eligible. Based in Durham, North Carolina, the Crafting Freedom Workshops will be offered twice: Session I: June 20-25, 2013 and Session II: June 27 -July 2, 2013.

The Workshops offer a $1200 stipend to cover expenses and feature seminars by top scholars, teacher mentors and artisans; free classroom-tested media and materials; tours to off-the-beaten track historic sites and archives, dramatic performances, a collegial-like setting and much more. Completed applications should be submitted to the project director, not the NEH, and postmarked no later than March 4, 2013. Approximately 40 contact hours can be awarded for this workshop.
