Brief Description: Registration is open for the first in a series of free Massive Open Online Courses for Educators (MOOC-Ed), entitled “Mathematics Learning Trajectories for the Common Core.” This professional development series focuses on learning trajectories as a framework for interpreting and implementing the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSS-M). The first course, “The Equipartitioning Learning Trajectory: a K-5 Foundation for Rational Number Reasoning,” examines how equipartitioning, grounded in fair sharing activities that create equal-sized groups or parts, provides a robust foundation for students’ conceptual understanding of division, multiplication, ratio, and fractions. Running from July 1 through August 16, the seven-week course is designed as professional development for anyone involved in mathematics education and in implementing the K–8 Common Core Math Standards at the classroom, school, or district level.

Learning trajectories describe student conceptual growth in mathematical reasoning. The learning trajectories, which systematically embed all the K-8 Standards, are displayed and unpacked at TurnOnCCMath.net. Drawing on accumulated educational research, TurnOnCCMath’s learning trajectories provide much-needed conceptual and grade-to-grade continuity for students’ mathematical learning that teachers need in order to make good use of the Standards. The Generating Increased Science and Math Opportunities (GISMO) team led by Dr. Jere Confrey and Dr. Alan Maloney, at North Carolina State University’s Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, developed the learning trajectories to cover all of the K-8 mathematics content of the Common Core.

A certificate of completion will be provided on request to participants who complete all the activities; it will specify that 20 hours of professional development activities have been completed. Those who request a certificate of completion will be asked to verify that they (1) spent at least 20 hours participating in the course, (2) participated in the discussions, (3) submitted each of the tasks and final project, and (4) provided feedback to authors of other projects. You can submit the certificate to your local agency with a request for CEUs. Granting of CEUs will be subject to the policies and procedures of your state and local agency.
