Brief Description: This 10-hour course is designed to be completed online by educators who would like to deepen their knowledge and skill set for engaging students in learning. The course provides teachers with an understanding of the factors that affect student effort and motivation. Each of the five sections is designed to represent approximately 2 hours of contact time, eligible for a total of 1.0 CEU upon completion of the course.
The course topics include:
-Define authentic student engagement in terms of observable student behaviors;
-Distinguish between authentic engagement and lower levels of student participation;
-Articulate how and why learners choose to pay attention to given content;
-Recognize instructional methods and strategies used to increase learner engagement;
-Determine appropriate strategies for engaging students in a variety of learning experiences;
Understand how the use of differentiation strategies increase student effort and motivation;
-Apply motivational techniques within their own instruction;
-Evaluate student learning based on key components of authentic student engagement; and
-Assess proficiency levels in engaging and motivating students throughout the learning process.
