Cumberland County's summer lunch program feeding hundreds more needy children this year

The Cumberland County schools' summer feeding program is helping hundreds more children from lower-income families this year. In the last few years, the program started each summer by providing meals to about 1,400 children who may not eat a healthy meal otherwise when not in school. Enrollment in the program usually rises to about 1,600 children after a few weeks. But this year, the school system's summer food program began June 18 with food for 1,780 children. Workers fixed meals for about 1,900 three days later. The head of the program expects the number of meals to increase to about 2,200 within four weeks.
