ALL-GIRLS CHARTER SCHOOL AIMS TO HELP UNDERPRIVILEGED KIDS

Wilmington could soon have a new public charter school aimed at helping underprivileged girls.Judy Girard, a former HGTV & Food Network president and vice chairwoman of Young Women Leading Inc., announced plans for the all-girls school Thursday morning at the Greater Wilmington Business Journal's Power Breakfast.The Young Women's Leadership Academy would start with sixth-grade students. Each grade level would have about 75 girls, and the school would eventually have sixth through 12th grades, Girard said.The school will have summer programs, including those at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and the academy also will stay open at night, she said following the program at the Wilmington Convention Center."Our target student will be those girls that are economically disadvantaged and don't have a way to see a road out," Girard said.
