STANDARD COURSE OF STUDY

LANGUAGE ARTS :: 1999 :: PREFACE

PREFACE

Intent of SCS The intent of the North Carolina English Language Arts Standard Course of Study (SCS) is to establish competency goals and objectives for the teaching and learning of English Language Arts in North Carolina. The document details the English Language Arts content that should be taught in all schools. Optional documents are available that support the SCS. These support documents offer suggestions for methodology and materials to implement the curriculum.

The primary goal of English Language Arts instruction in North Carolina is to ensure that all students learn how to use language effectively in order to function as individuals and as contributing members of society.
Revisions of SCS The entire K-12 North Carolina English Language Arts Standard Course of Study was last revised in 1992. The beginning reading portion was revised in 1997 in response to legislative mandate to include more emphasis on early and systematic phonics instruction within a balanced reading program.

A major difference between this revision and the 1992 curriculum is in the level of detail provided. The 1992 curriculum contained four global goals and twelve objectives that were the same for all grades. This curriculum contains specific goals and objectives for each grade level.
