BANNED in the Bookhenge: Intellectual Freedom, Censorship, and Young Adult Literature
Young adult literature (YAL) as a genre pushes the boundaries and questions authority as much its namesake. On March 31, 2008, Frances Bradburn aka Reid Nitely, Chair of the American Library Association's first Printz Committee and a powerful advocate for YAL, met with us in Second Life to discuss how to best negotiate the tough issues in YAL surrounding intellectual freedom and censorship.

Poetry 2.0 Series Continues with Poetry Out Loud Web Workshop
Poetry 2.0 is a new version of poetry that is technology-powered so we can see it, hear it, and interact with it live on the Web.Our second Poetry 2.0 live webcast on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, was devoted to the performance of poetry. State Poet Laureate Kay Byer and well-known poet Michael Beadle explored the performance of poetry with high school students from Kevin Norris's class at Cherokee High School and Julie Osmon's class at Manteo High School. This program was designed to be helpful for all students interested in poetry, particularly those preparing for the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest.
This live, interactive online workshop for high school students and teachers is brought to you by the North Carolina Arts Council and the NC Department of Public Instruction.

Our first Poetry 2.0 event for high school students and teachers was a poetry-writing workshop with our State Poet Laureate, Kathryn Stripling Byer held on April 18th.
Kay worked with three high school English classes across the state -- Mountains, Piedmont, and Coast -- via the magic of videoconferencing, and other students and teachers were invited to watch the live web cast and interact via the Instant Message Board.
The three studio classes were from Cherokee Central High School, Cherokee (Jamie Lightfoot Underwood, Teacher), Penn-Griffin School of the Arts, High Point (John York, Teacher) and Manteo High School Manteo, Manteo (Julie Osmon, Teacher).

Each year we choose a well-known author to read, study, and then meet with in a live event. Past authors have included Lois Lowry, John Marsden, and Rick Riordan. Lowry joined us via videoconferencing from Boston, Marsden by phone from the Australian Bush, and Riordan was right in in Raleigh. This year we were thrilled that our author, John Green aka Seymour Sideways, who won the Printz Award 2006 first time through the gate with Looking for Alaska and then won an honor award for An Abundance of Katherines, was game to try something totally revolutionary -- meeting with adult fans in Second Life while teen fans participated via Internet Radio and chat. Here's the archived program. Watch the 2007 Percy's Project Celebration Podcast!
See the HP-TV (Hephaestus TV) Production Team!Ever feel a little different, like maybe you just don’t fit in? Percy Jackson's feelings were confirmed when he discovered that he was the son of a Greek god. Yes, the gods of Mount Olympus are alive and well in contemporary America, working out of the real penthouse on the Empire State Building.
So could you be a demigod like Percy Jackson? If Latin comes easy to you then you just might be . . .
Fans of Percy Jackson and the Olympians series were invited to join the author Rick Riordan in a live videoconference/webcast on Tuesday, April 17, from 11 to noon. Riordan and the HP-TV Production Team (that's Hephaestus TV) were live from Raleigh’s Ravenscroft School with a remote site at UNC-Charlotte for our Lake Norman Charter School HP-TV Production Team members. Students prepared for the meeting by reading the first two books in the series, The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters, and joining other fans online to discuss Percy’s adventures as a hip demigod in contemporary America. Teachers also networked to find other classes with whom to collaborate on joint class discussions or class projects. Our meeting with Riordan was a great way to get ready for the publication of the third book to be published May 1: The Titans’ Curse. Be sure and check out Percy’s Party activities for the big publication party listed on Riordan’s website

The 2008 Melinda Awards for Young Adult Literature
Hollywood may or may not have a big, glitzy Oscars program this year. But there are no writers involved in the Melinda Awards and we'll be here with zing and bling to tout our favorite YA novels of the year and diss those that failed to meet our expectations. The big event will be held on Monday, Feb. 11, from 4:45 to 6:00 pm ET.
Be sure and check out your Webcast accessibility here in advance . . .
