NEW LISTSERV FOR ALL EDUCATIONAL INTERPRETERS & DEAF EDUCATORS

DPI announces the establishment of two listervs. You can join this listserv for either Educational Interpreters and Transliterators or Deaf Educators and Professional working with children with hearing loss by following the directions below.

  1. Send an email to join-interpreter@lists.dpi.state.nc.us (Educational Interpreters and Transliterators)(and/or join-hearingeducation@lists.dpi.state.nc.us (Deaf educators and professionals) from the email you wish to receive information.
  2. You will receive an email from the list serve directing you to click a link for the final process. Once you click the link the process is completed.
  3. You will receive an email stating that you are now a member of the specific list serve.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

TESTING ANNOUNCEMENT

On behalf of Mary N. Watson, Director of Exceptional Children Division:
At the April 2007 meeting, the State Board of Education extended the requirement date for testing of Interpreters/Transliterators from July 1, 2007 to July 1, 2008. This will provide adequate time for continued staff development and assessment.

School systems may contract with interpreters or transliterators who have not passed the EIPA or TECUnit assessments until June 30, 2007. This extension was set by the NC State Board of Education. All those interpreters and transliterators working in the school systems or contracted with by the school systems must pass the required test by June 30, 2008.

TRAINING REPORT 2008

All interpreters and transliterators working in public schools must report 15 hours of training per year. This must be reported through your Exceptional Children Director unless you are a contract employee. In that case you should send the Educational Interpreter Training Report to Rachael Ragin at 6356 MSC, Raleigh, NC 27699 or email it to rragin@dpi.state.nc.us This report is due July 28, 2008

PROJECT CONNECT

Project CONNECT is a program at UNChelps prepare students become highly qualified educational interpreters upon graduation.

How does this program work?

Any interested students currently enrolled in the Interpreter Preparation Program at UNCG or at another college can apply for a grant/stipend. They must do the following for EACH semester that they wish to get grant/stipend money:

  • complete a Project CONNECT Application Form
  • write a personal statement or letter about their educational background, their GPA, their recent or current involvement with children and/or individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, explain why they are interested in becoming an educational interpreter, their previous experience in interpreting and their future goals
  • ask three individuals to write letters of recommendation or to have their current or former supervisors complete the Project CONNECT Reference Form
  • get a printout of their current Degree Evaluation or college transcript

All application materials are sent to me who will then meet with the Project CONNECT committee to review the application materials and decide who will receive a tuition grant/stipend for the semester. The application/forms can be downloaded from http://www.uncg.edu/ses/connect.html

Attached you will find a copy of the brochure about Project CONNECT. Please feel free to share this information with your students. If you'd like for me to meet with your students about Project CONNECT, I'd be happy to! Also, if you plan on attending the next NCASLTA workshop on April 12 here at UNCG, I can put together several packets about Project CONNECT for you to bring back with you.
