Managing Hearing Loss; Improving Services for Children with Hearing Loss

The Management of Hearing Loss -Scope and Sequence is a program consists of 10 goal areas. Each goal area is divided into several strands of instruction. Each strand has associated activities appropriate to the age / developmental levels of instruction. The sequence of 10 goal areas (skill sets) is organized into the areas of perception, processing, knowledge of self, and advocacy. The purpose of the program is to help a student with hearing loss become an effective listener, a successful communicator, a proficient reader, and a knowledgeable consumer of goods & services. It can be used as a stand-alone habilitation program or a collaborative rehabilitation tool when used in conjunction with a language curriculum, content vocabulary instruction, and/ or an auditory skills development program.

COLLABORATIVE WORKSHOPS

January 9-10, 2012 Bloom & Lahey1 CASLLS1: Road Map to Typical Language Development
This workshop will focus on tracking and teaching the sequence of early, expanding and complex language development using the Bloom & Lahey model and the CASLLS Scales. Applications to manual and spoken communication are discussed.

January 19-20, 2012 Long Range Planning
Participants will select one child’s EC file from their caseload and bring it to the workshop, then utilize that file to identify needs & develop a long range plan to close gaps.

January 31, 2012 Laying the Foundation for Long Range Planning
Participants will learn about how, when and why the ongoing assessment of students with hearing loss is important and how to choose the most appropriate assessment tools for progress monitoring.

February 9-10, 2012 Developing Proactive Partnerships
In this workshop participants will discuss how to empower parents as advocates & teachers by developing relationships that allows both the professional and parent to be proactive.

February 21-22, 2012 NCSIP: Reading Foundations Part I
This program is designed to introduce teachers to the knowledge, skills and procedures needed to provide effective instruction for students with persistent reading difficulties. The teaching principles, techniques and strategies presented in this program are supported by an extensive body of instructional research involving students with reading difficulties. The program will provide you with a solid foundation on which to build an effective reading instruction program.

February 23, 2012 Classroom Observations
The purpose of this workshop is to describe the components of an effective classroom observation for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, including analysis of the physical environment, use of amplification, instructional technology, and group and/or personal assistive listening devices.

April 30, 2012 Language vs. Academics: The Battle is On(**Pre-requisite: Roadmaps to Language Development I and II)
Using information obtained in the “Roadmaps to Language Development,” participants will learn how to take Common Core Academic Standards and teach language and vocabulary goals for school-age students with significant language delay.

ONLINE *Speech Babble
The agenda will include information on typical babble development, speech acoustics, why and how we do speech babble.

ONLINE *Vocabulary
We will cover information regarding vocabulary development and its relation to language development. Video clip analysis and individual vocabulary lesson development.

ONLINE *Vowels
Vowels explained. Focus on the ins and outs of vowel development, from norms to selection to auditory bombardment and vowels of the week. Video clip analysis and individual planning will help pull it all together.

  1. There is NO COST for NC Professionals; $50 for out-of-state attendees
  2. Non ASHA CEU's will be offered for all workshops.
