The Behavioral Support Section are the educational
representatives for some of the Eckerd Camp Screening Committees.
Referrals for children and youth which are completed by public
school personnel are sent to the DPI representatives to be
presented at the monthly screening and referral committee
meetings.
There are four Eckerd Wilderness Camps in North Carolina. The objective of the camping program is to aid children and youth in developing appropriate social relationship skills, problem-solving skills, and personal values which can be transferred to their home, school, and community setting. The Eckerd Wilderness Educational System provides a psycho-educational experience through utilization of a unique therapeutic community. In the midst of a wilderness setting, the youth live in a small, ongoing, self-sufficient group facilitated by committed, participating staff. These components structure a natural therapeutic milieu, where problems may be discussed as they arise. The program is client-centered, with mutually agreed upon participation from the youth and family. Goal orientation is stressed with periodic evaluation and revision. While the child is involved in the program, similar goal-oriented services are provided to the family with emphasis on successful parenting techniques.
