NORTH CAROLINA
ACTION RESEARCH NETWORK

COORDINATORS :: Angela Jackson

Built on the phenomenal work of the Governor’s Teacher Network (GTN), Pathway 1, the Educator Effectiveness Division has developed and deployed the “North Carolina Action Research Network.” The design of the program was based on GTN Pathway 1, but has transformed into regional networks of teachers participating in Action Research professional development and designing/implementing an action research project in their classroom for improved student performance and improved teacher practice. They will be supported by Action Research Coaches throughout the process to ensure high quality work. The Action Research Coaches were former GTN Pathway 1 participants who are trained to be instructional coaches and to support the teachers through the action research process. Please visit the North Carolina Action Research wiki, NC Action Research Network, for more information about this initiative.

Good teaching motivates students to learn. Good teachers inspire each other when they share their most innovative and creative practices.

The NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) established the Governor's Teacher Network (GTN) with funding from the state’s Race to the Top grant. It provided a statewide platform for teachers to share their best work around instruction and professional development and helped advance Race to the Top (RttT) funded educational remodeling efforts across the state.

Through the GTN, approximately 450 outstanding teachers from across North Carolina were selected to serve for one year as instructional and professional development experts and facilitators.

Network teachers remained in their instructional roles, but also designed and delivered individual projects that address needs in the classroom, school or LEA level.  These projects fit within one of two pathways:

  • Pathway 1: Professional Development
    Professional development sessions and materials (face-to-face, webinars and online modules) to address classroom instructional needs and  increase the PD offerings in the state-wide Professional Development system in Home Base.

  • Pathway 2: Instructional Resources
    Instructional sequences for Home Base that are aligned to the N C Standard Course of study and that consist of unit plans, lesson plans that seamlessly integrate the formative assessment process in daily practice, and where applicable, assessment items that are aligned to the standards to be taught in the lessons/unit.
