PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Who is eligible to participate?

Graduates of accredited North Carolina public or private colleges or universities who are either recent graduates or mid-career professionals who do not already have a teaching license and who are committed to expanding educational opportunities for students in high need communities in North Carolina. While target degree areas are those related to math, science, and special education, partnering districts may have other vacancy needs.


What are the requirements to qualify for the program?

  • Participants must hold a bachelor's degree or 24 semester hours in the related area or pass the PRAXIS II; (Certain subject areas may have additional requirements)
  • Participants must have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5. Additional information – Qualifying for Lateral Entry:

  • Participants must not already have a teaching degree
  • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching

What are my commitments?

  • Complete pre-employment training sessions in May/June (face to face and online),
  • Participate in a 3 week summer professional development program in mid July through the beginning of August to include a classroom experience under a Master teacher in a designated LEA,
  • Participate in targeted professional development sessions on 4 Saturdays during the year (2 in the fall and 2 in the spring),
  • Complete all required coursework for teacher licensure
  • Commit to teaching in a designated high needs school in one of NCTC partner districts in North Carolina for a two-year period
  • Pass all required Praxis II test(s) to meet eligibility requirements and obtain teacher licensure
