WSE First Years of Teaching Support Program provides support to new teachers
directly and systemically via professional development, mentoring, district-wide
initiatives, state-wide conferences and support/professional development for
mentors and administrators. We maintain monthly contact with all participants
through a regular newsletter and an extensive resource website. We host a
yearly mentor conference and this year we are adding a conference geared for
new teachers. We served 704 new teachers and 179 mentors last year (07-08)
through this program either personally or virtually.

WSE National Board Support Program is a multi-faceted approach to certification
support that has several tiers. We support initial, renewal and retake candidates
through face-to face sessions and electronic support. We also provide training
to facilitators who wish to support candidates, as well as provide resources
and support for district-wide support initiatives and information. Last year
(07-08) we served 169 teachers/candidates and over 100 facilitators statewide.

Emerging Teacher Leaders Network (ETLN) is a project that supports and mentors
our graduates in their first two years of teaching. We hold an annual two-day
professional development conference in January that offers sessions on a variety
of topics and features former students in a panel presentation who are in
leadership roles in their districts. We also have a website that includes
resources and grant opportunities as well as a listserv for graduates to communicate
with each other and faculty members. Faculty advisers stay in touch with our
beginning teachers to mentor graduates and when feasible, they make visits
to their classrooms. The project is in its 5th year.
We also have a small professional development fund that graduates can apply
to for assistance with professional development, teaching resources, etc.

Currently the Center for Educational Studies and Development (CESD) is providing
workshops facilitated by Joan Celestino for those National Board Certified
Teachers (NBCT's) who are in their 8th year and are going to renew. We have
conducted these workshops for the past 2 years with great success. The workshops
are structured for 2-days. This year we are taking our show on the road to
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools through the support of a Reynolds American
grant.
The CESD plans to offer workshops for those who are interested in applying
for their NBCT in the near future. For more information about National Board
support through UNCG, please visit the Professional Development website at
