Why Educator Effectiveness Matters to Students

Tom Tomberlin, LEA Human Resources Director, presenting at READY IV Meetings, 2014
Teachers play a significant role in the success of students, but how significant is this role? What happens to students who are assigned year after year to teachers who successfully coax strong academic growth from their students? What about students who are assigned to teachers who do not have a track record of strong academic growth in their classes? Over time, the impact of teachers with a strong academic growth record places students on a very positive trajectory for future success. The impact of teachers with a weak academic growth record can place students behind. In the spring of 2014 in regional meetings with superintendents, principals and other local educators, Dr. Tom Tomberlin, the NC Department of Public Instruction’s Director of District Human Resources, shared his analyses of the impact of teachers on students over time. This video of his presentation provides an opportunity for a broader audience to benefit from this analysis.

The educator evaluation system in North Carolina focuses on teachers’ contribution to the academic success of students, but also five other important measures – demonstrating leadership, establishing a respectful environment for a diverse population of students, knowledge of the content they teach, facilitating learning for their students, and reflecting on their practice – are evaluated to provide a complete picture of a teacher’s success. These six standards in equal measure comprise North Carolina’s educator evaluation system. Evaluating teachers fairly and accurately so that they can improve their teaching skills is essential because having a strong teacher can make all the difference for students, from kindergarten through 12th grade.
