Global - Ready Schools and District Designations

In September 2011, the North Carolina State Board of Education formed a Task Force on Global Education to assess the state's effort to produce globally competitive graduates ready to live, work and contribute in an interconnected world. Based on its findings, the Task Force made a number of recommendations that would help to ensure that public school students are well prepared.

One opportunity coming out of the Global Education Task Force work was the creation of criteria and a process for the Global - Ready Schools and Districts Designation. From the Final Report, refer to: 4.2 - Institute in concert with global education partners a Global - Ready designation for schools and districts that provides a process and incentives and addresses, at the least, the following:

  • K-12 world language opportunities for all students;
  • Pathways for teachers, leaders and administrators to achieve SBE-recognized badging;
  • Career-ready employer requirements;
  • Global school partnerships; and
  • Local school board resolutions and plans on global education.

The State Board of Education approved the Global-Ready Schools Designation Rubric at the January 2015 meeting.

The State Board of Education approved the Global-Ready District Designation Rubric at the May 2015 meeting.

Global-Ready School Application and Guidance Document for 2017-2018
This document contains application forms and guidance for the 2017-2018 application cycle. : Schools may apply for "Acknowledgement" as a school that has chosen to implement strategies towards the Designation status. These submissions will be reviewed to provide feedback, resource suggestions and be invited to NC Global Education Collaborative initiatives and professional development opportunities.

Schools that apply for the "Designation" status and meet both the criteria for “Prepared” or “Model” and the student achievement requirements will be notified in May. These schools will be scheduled for a site visit in September. These schools will also be invited to North Carolina Global Education Collaborative initiatives and professional development opportunities.

All School applications for 2017-2018 are due on or before April 6, 2018.

Global-Ready School Designation Intent to Apply
The annual academic cycle for the Global-Ready School Designation Application is as follows: applications available in the fall and must be submitted by the first Friday in April. Schools interested in applying for the designation need a PDF fillable application packet to complete and submit. The contact person listed will receive a PDF version of the current year application, along with direct updates regarding the application, resources and webinars. Receiving the PDF version of the application does not obligate the school to apply.

Global-Ready School Designation Presentation
This presentation provides an overview of the NC State Board of Education's global strategic plan, the Global-Ready Schools Rubric and Application process. Information in the Application and Guidance document is presented along with activities to help applicants in completing the application process. Global-Ready District Application and Guidance Document for 2017-2018
