Working title: Systems Administrator

The primary purpose of this position is to perform Linux (mostly Red Hat)/Solaris/Unix Systems Administration and support Apache Web Services. This position reports to the NCWISE Operations Manager and requires a broad range of technical related duties to be performed. This position will be responsible for maintaining system software and configurations as needed to support the NCWISE solution, including but not limited to: Apache web server, Weblogic server, Tomcat application server, building environments and loading/patching software; system-level best practices, application availability monitoring, hardware and operating system platform choices, capacity planning, software configuration, user administration, and logical storage allocation and management; advising the NCWISE Operations Manager, database administrators (DBAs), and other system administrators on project design and implementation decisions; strategic, logistical, tactical, and technical assessments, as well as performing various tasks related to the definition, maintenance, and administration of various operating systems and hardware; guiding the NCWISE team by providing general Linux/Solaris/Unix best practices; ensuring system availability for the Application Server Administrator, DBA team, and the NCWISE user community; and acting as a technical liaison to the NCWISE Host Provider and other vendors, as needed, on system issues.

Some specific duties of the position include performing Solaris/Unix systems administration and supporting Apache Web services; evaluating application and system performance and suggesting alternatives to improve system efficiency; diagnosing and correcting processing errors; evaluating symptoms and using deductive reasoning skills to determine the cause of failures; building new environments; performing capacity planning, software configuration, user administration, and logical storage allocation and management; coordinating software needs for the system users and coordinating upgrades; providing network support and consultation with users on potential computerization through the use of the system or equipment; monitoring environments through the use of tools or scripts to ensure efficient application and system processing; recommending evaluation of new technologies from primary or third party vendors; recommending purchase when cost justifiable; and implementing new technologies and best practices to improve application performance, lower processing costs or simply administrative efforts.

This position is located in Raleigh, NC but may occasionally travel, sometimes regionally overnight. Due to the fact that this position provides 24/7 support, this position may be required to work nights, weekends, or holidays.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

An ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge and experience managing server-class systems in a large heterogeneous computing environment; of principles and methods used in obtaining maximum utilization of computing equipment; of the Linux operating system and Apache; of Microsoft operating systems, common office productivity applications, and the capabilities and limitations of computers and peripheral equipment; of capacity planning and network engineering; and of security best practices and requirements. Expert knowledge of shell scripting in at least two of the following is preferred: bash, sh, ksh, csh, tcsh, zsh, perl, tcl/tk. The candidate should have the ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form to explain complex systems concepts to customers, staff, and peers in a simple, effective, and appropriate manner; establish and maintain effective working relationships; perform root cause analysis on system and network issues; and quickly evaluate multiple operational situations, choose the most appropriate response, and manage the resolution to completion while under stressful conditions.

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum requirements include a bachelor's degree with a major in information technology, computer science, or a closely related field and three years of experience in operations analysis and design, systems programming, or a closely related field. Experience in the field of work related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Degrees must have been received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Management prefers experience in the administration of computer systems at the enterprise level. Red Hat Linux certification and Oracle database administration experience are also preferred.

Recruitment for these positions will target the Journey level of the Operations and Systems Specialist band. The hiring range for this position is ($76000-85000) and the salary will be commensurate with the applicant's competencies as well as the budget, equity, and market considerations. If no candidates are identified at the Journey competency level, management may consider candidates at the Contributing competency level. The hiring range at this level will be ($61539-74462). For promotional and reemployment priority purposes, this position is considered to be equivalent to salary grade 82 at the journey level and salary grade 79 at the contributing level.
