MISSION ::The mission of the Division of Middle and Secondary Education is to provide effective leadership and guidance to local education agencies, in collaboration with community organizations on addressing the unique developmental and learning needs of healthy and responsible adolescents in an environment that is safe, orderly, and caring, while developing skills necessary to meet educational, career, civic and personal goals in the present and twenty-first century.

  • Changing the Way We Teach: Integrating Technology in the K-12 Social Studies Classroom
    A year-long professional development cohort that seeks to provide tools for smooth integration in social studies classrooms to enhance and raise academic achievement.

  • Concept-Based Curriculum & Instruction Pilot Program
    The 6-12 Social Studies Section would like to invite your school in collaboration with several schools throughout the state to participate in a two-year pilot initiative. This pilot program is designed to enhance the development of local curriculum frameworks and instructional materials and is based on the research and work of Dr. H. Lynn Erickson (Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction for the Thinking Classroom). This two-year pilot program will begin during the 2008-2009 school year with follow-up visit(s) during the 2009-2010 school year.

    If you are interested in participating in this pilot program, complete the application (pdf, 83kb) and submit to NCDPI by 5:00pm est. on April 4, 2008. All applications will be acknowledged and those sites selected to participate will be notified no later than May 9, 2008.

  • 2009-10 Outline of the Course Coding Structure
    This document contains the course codes used in NC WISE and SIMS to identify courses taught in the North Carolina public school system as well as courses that may be taken at a community college, university or on-line. The booklet also provides a description of the course code structure, an explanation of the seven-digit code and numerous appendices to help explain various coding options.

  • North Carolina Extended Content Standards
    The No Child Left Behind Act requires that all students, including those with the most significant cognitive disabilities, have access to the standard course of study at grade level. This document provides entry point extensions so that all students can have meaningful and functional access to grade level standards. This reference document should be used to develop goals, activities and materials for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities.

  • Transition Planning For 21st Century Schools
    Because learning is a continuous process, transition planning is important for all who educate and guide students. UCLA (2003) urges schools to "understand the impact of transitions and establish a range of transition supports". Transition Planning is designed to support districts, schools, and classrooms with the development and evaluation of a comprehensive and coordinated transition plan. Although students experience transitions at each grade level, this document offers a framework for transitions that occur during preschool to kindergarten, second grade to third grade, elementary to middle grades, middles grades to secondary and beyond. Additional transition resources are provided.

  • Operating Procedures Manual Enrollment of High School Intellectually Gifted and Mature Students in Community
    These procedures have been prepared cooperatively by the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to facilitate effective planning for cooperative programs between community colleges and high schools in North Carolina. These procedures replace previous procedures for Huskins, concurrent enrollment, and intellectually gifted students programs. This document is effective with the planning cycle for cooperative programs between community colleges and high schools for the 2004-2005 high school and college academic year.

  • North Carolina High School Exit Standards Implementation Guide
    This guide contains policy, procedures and strategies for implementing high school exit standards. Students beginning with the freshman class of 2006-07 are required to achieve proficiency on the five End of Course Assessments and successfully complete a graduation project. Topics in the handbook include: Policies, Graduation Project, Limited English Proficient (LEP) Considerations, and Exceptional Children (EC) Considerations.
