STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION SUPPORTS CHILDREN'S HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAMS

At its monthly meeting Thursday (March 5), members of the State Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution in support of Gov. Jim Hunt's plan to provide health care for uninsured children across the state.

The resolution notes the connection between the Board's commitment to high standards for student performance, especially in the basic subjects, and the need for students to be healthy in order to be ready to learn.

The Governor has stated that 71,000 youngsters in North Carolina are from working families who do not have health insurance and are not eligible for Medicaid.

The US Congress has enacted legislation that makes $79.9 million available to North Carolina contingent upon a partial match of state dollars. The Governor will seek that matching-fund support from the General Assembly. Through that match, 26 cents in state dollars will provide a full dollar's worth of health care for children.
