DROPOUT PREVENTION GRANT APPLICATION ONLINE;
ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE MEETINGS SCHEDULED
The Dropout Prevention Grant application and corresponding downloadable forms are now available on the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's Web site, www.ncpublicschools.org, under Highlights and via links located at the bottom of this press release.
The North Carolina General Assembly convened a Dropout Prevention Grants Committee to distribute $7 million in grant funds appropriated during its 2007 session to support programs and initiatives that target students at risk of dropping out of school.
School districts, schools, local agencies and nonprofit organizations can apply for the dropout prevention grants, which are to be used for innovative programs and initiatives that target students at risk of dropping out of school and that demonstrate the potential to:
- be developed into effective, sustainable and coordinated dropout prevention and re-entry programs in middle and high schools; and
- serve as effective models for other programs.
Programs and initiatives that receive grants shall be based on best practices for preventing students from dropping out of school or for increasing the high school completion rate for those students who already have dropped out of school. Priority will be given to new programs and initiatives or those that have begun within the last five school years.
To assist potential applicants with the application process, two additional technical assistance meetings have been scheduled. These meetings will be held on Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. - 12 noon at the Wilson County Agriculture Building in Wilson and at the Western Region Education Service Alliance A-B Tech/Enka Campus in Asheville. Application materials must be submitted by 5 p.m., Dec. 17, to Kathy Sullivan, North Carolina State Board of Education, 6302 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-6302. Fax and email copies will not be reviewed. Grant recipients will be selected Jan. 14-15 and notified on Jan. 18.
