NEWS RELEASES 2007-08 :: FEBRUARY 29, 2008

In recognition and celebration of Read Across America, State Superintendent June Atkinson on Monday, March 3, will be the guest reader at Mount Energy Elementary School in Creedmoor (Granville County Schools).

Atkinson will read the book she wrote, "A T-Shirt Named Zee," a book about determination, resiliency and empathy, to a pre-K class, a kindergarten class and a fifth grade class.

"One of the greatest pleasures I have as State Superintendent is the opportunity to visit public school classrooms and interact with students," Atkinson said. "It is so important for adults to read to young children. There is nothing like seeing the wonder and other emotions on their faces as you relate the story."

The National Education Association sponsors Read Across America, an "annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on or around Dr. Seuss’s birthday."

Atkinson will be at Mount Energy Elementary from 10-11:30 a.m. For more information, please contact the Communications division at 919.807.3450.
