NCDPI SPONSORS STATEWIDE SCHOOL SAFETY CONFERENCE
45 "Super Safe" Schools Will Be Recognized During Annual Event
More than 600 parents, educators, school resource officers, law enforcement
and others who work to create safe and healthy schools across North Carolina
will gather in Raleigh this week for the 2009 Safe Schools and Character
Education Conference. The annual conference is sponsored by NCDPI and takes
place Feb. 25-27 at the Raleigh Convention Center (2 East South Street, Raleigh.)
As
a part of the event, 45 North Carolina schools with decreased incidents of
crime and violence will be recognized as 2008-09 Super Safe Schools. Also
at the conference, Beverly Woods Elementary School, Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Schools, will be named the 2009 North Carolina State School of Character.
"Keeping our schools safe and healthy requires a team effort from parents,
schools and communities," said State Superintendent June Atkinson. "I commend all of these partners as well as our Super Safe Schools and Schools
of Character for working so hard throughout the year to create learning environments
in which all students can excel."
Conference attendees will participate in workshops on alternative education,
building a positive school culture, gang awareness, dropout prevention
and other issues related to school safety and character education. Featured
speakers
include North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, former SBI Director
and Secretary of Crime Control and Public Safety Bryan Beatty and Secretary
of
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Linda Hayes. For a complete
agenda, visit www.ncpublicschools.org/safeschools/conferences/.

conference, 45 North Carolina schools that have made extra efforts to maintain
a safe, orderly and caring learning and working environment
will be named as 2008-09 Super Safe Schools. To enter the competition,
school
leaders must submit a portfolio highlighting their safety initiatives.
