NC SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS POLICY EFFORT
North Carolina is one of three states and one territory to be selected to participate in a national teacher effectiveness policy effort. The National Governors Association (NGA) has announced that North Carolina – along with Colorado, Nevada and Guam – will be a contributor to the State Strategies to Evaluate Teacher Effectiveness Policy Academy.
The Policy Academy will allow participating states to assemble leadership teams of governors advisors, chief state school officers, and district and community leaders to develop and plan for the implementation of new statewide teacher evaluation policies. States will receive in-depth technical assistance from NGA and its partners, including two policy academy meetings that will pair state leadership teams with leading national experts to develop and plan to implement rigorous teacher evaluation strategies. The Policy Academy will also promote the use of evaluation results to manage and improve performance.
North Carolina has been piloting a new teacher evaluation instrument for the last three years, and the State Board of Education recently adopted the addition of student growth as one of six components that will be used in determining teacher effectiveness. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is working closely with administrators and teachers across the state to ensure that this new tool is working to better support teachers as they determine where they can improve in the classroom.
"We have devoted a great deal of time and effort toward supporting our teachers and principals in finding new and more meaningful ways to assess their work," said Lynne Johnson, Director of Professional Development for NCDPI. "Our work in the area of teacher effectiveness has been noticed on the national level, and that is affirmation that we are headed in the right direction."
Teacher effectiveness has long been a priority in NGA's work. Governors have worked with fellow state leaders to redesign evaluation systems so they can more constructively assess teacher knowledge and drive performance management decisions such as compensation, professional development and retention.
"We are very excited to be able to share what we have learned about supporting teacher effectiveness on the national level," said State Superintendent June Atkinson. "We very much look forward to working with our partners across North Carolina as we continue to develop policies that will guide us in this critical effort."
