PUBLIC HEARINGS SCHEDULED TO RECEIVE COMMENTS ON STATE'S CARL PERKINS CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION ACT

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's Career and Technical Education Division has scheduled public hearings to receive comments on possible changes to the state's Carl Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006.

The Perkins Act provides increased focus on the academic achievement of career and technical education students and strengthens the connections between secondary and postsecondary education. The plan, which is available online at www.ncpublicschools.org/cte/carl-perkins/, is updated as needed every five years.

Those who wish to make statements at the hearings must notify JoAnne Honeycutt by e-mail (JoAnne.Honeycutt@dpi.nc.gov) 48 hours before the hearing date. Each presenter will receive five minutes; however, the hearing officer may grant more time if the situation and attendance warrants such. A written or typed copy of each person's remarks must be submitted to the hearing officer. Presentations and remarks may be electronically recorded. If signing is needed, please notify JoAnne Honeycutt 48 hours before the hearing date so that A Signer may be scheduled.

Comments also may be submitted via e-mail to JoAnne.Honeycutt@dpi.nc.gov or by U.S. mail to JoAnne Honeycutt, Director, Career and Technical Education, 6361 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-6361. The deadline for submission of comments is Feb. 28. All comments will be reviewed and shared as appropriate with the N.C. State Board of Education. The Board is expected to take action on any Department recommendations at its March meeting. Following Board action, the revised state plan will be sent to the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Vocational & Adult Education for approval.
