NC SUPERINTENDENT MARK JOHNSON TO PARTICIPATE IN JUNE 6 REACH OUT AND READ EVENT

UnitedHealthcare to Present $7,500 Grant in Support of Early Literacy

NC Superintendent Mark Johnson will participate in a special literacy support event hosted by Reach Out and Read and the Wake County Child Health Clinic on Tuesday, June 6, at 2:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Wake County Child Health Clinic, 10 Sunnybrook Road, Raleigh.

At this event, UnitedHealthcare will present a $7,500 grant to allow children from 6 months to 5 years of age to receive a new book each time they visit the Wake County Child Health Clinic for appointments.

News media are invited to the check presentation ceremony and are asked to report to the information desk in the clinic’s first floor upon arrival.

Superintendent Johnson and UnitedHealthcare Vice President Anita Bachmann will read to children visiting the clinic for well-child checkups.

This local book distribution event is a part of NC Reads, an initiative Johnson launched in April. NC Reads promotes three goals to combat the “summer brain drain:”

  • collect books, and funds for books, to donate to preschoolers and students for summer reading;
  • distribute free subscriptions for every student in K-5 to myON, which provides each user with a personalized literacy environment; and
  • develop the NC Reads online resource to seamlessly connect volunteers, donors, and stakeholders to literacy efforts and programs across North Carolina.
