  • Build a strong consensus on the definition of essential standards as well as a convincing rationale for the work. Identify possible challenges that may be presented and develop strategies to mitigate those challenges.
  • Establish a professional development sub-plan for DPI Staff that builds knowledge and skills to create essential standards.

  • Develop working groups including diverse stakeholders with the goal of identifying essential standards for each content area and/or cluster of content areas.
  • Map interdisciplinary relationships between content standards and develop tools that facilitate purposeful integrated instruction.
  • Design tools, instructional materials, methods and sessions that build understanding and skill in using essential standards to raise student achievement.
  • Collaborate regularly and closely with Accountability to ensure that assessments give a reliable and valid picture of the increasing depth and specificity of student knowledge and skill.

A K-12 writing assessment system will be designed to set an ambitious standard for the developmental arch of student writers as vetted by multiple experts and stakeholders.

  • Involving stakeholders to help drive the process, build a strong consensus on the definitions of Writing Across the Curriculum as well as a convincing rationale for the work. Identify possible challenges it may present and develop strategies to mitigate those challenges.
  • Establish a professional development sub-plan for DPI Staff that builds knowledge and skills in Writing Across the Curriculum.
  • Develop a writing model for K-12 and a pilot for grades 4 & 7 that includes local writing samples and authentic writing tasks using cross-functional teams within the agency.
  • Develop communication plan that includes professional development and informational briefs on the writing pilot for grades 4 and 7 teachers.
  • Use feedback from the grades 4 & 7 pilot to inform K-12 writing model.
