CHARTER SCHOOLS

PRIORITY OBJECTIVES & STRATEGIES

While purposefully guarding the statutorily mandated autonomous nature of charter schools, the Office of Charter Schools has three Priority Objectives

New Measure
  • Provide technical assistance in data analysis.
  • Provide schools technical assistance (and staff development as needed) in understanding Charter School law, State Board policies and procedures, and governance requirements.
  • Provide school administrative assistance and resources in issues such as scheduling, staff development, response to parents' concerns, student discipline, Board of Directors concerns, and personnel issues.
  • Provide focused staff development.
  • Hold Charter Schools Conference highlighting "best practices" of teachers and individual schools, and opportunities for networking and sharing ideas.

New Measure
  • Develop and update annually a charter application and application resource guide.
  • Train prospective charter applicants in the application process including guidance on law and selection issues.
  • Provide needed assistance throughout the application process.
  • Develop and present in-depth training for all founding non-profit boards on a monthly basis throughout the preliminary planning year to include training in: leadership, governance, finance, law and policy, state regulations and reporting, teacher certification, state and national exceptional children issues, and other operational issues.

All charter schools involved in the SBE charter renewal process will respond positively to key questions about The Office of Charter Schools' assistance during this renewal process. 75%

New Measure
  • Require each school whose charter is two years away from expiring to complete a self study.
  • Compile any initial areas of concern generated by the self study and/or DPI compliance data and share with each school and the Leadership for Innovation Committee.
  • Allow renewal schools 9 months to create and implement an action plan to make improvements as necessary.
  • Gather, review, and report updated student performance and compliance data for each charter school to the State Board.
