STANDARD 4: TEACHERS FACILITATE LEARNING FOR THE STUDENTS

A. Knows the Ways in Which Learning Takes Place, and the Appropriate Levels of Intellectual, Physical, Social, and Emotional Development of Students


21st Century Learning: Putting on Global Lenses

The course will examine local and global educational trends and enable teachers to recognize the in?uences of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and other aspects of culture on a student's development, personality and school performance. It will also aid teachers in considering and incorporating different points of view in their instructional planning. Components of the training will assist teachers in providing evidence for Standards II, III, and IV of the Teacher Evaluation Tool.


Responsiveness to Instruction
Kindergarten-12th, Responsiveness to Instruction, DPI
Professional development is designed to prepare LEA and school teams on the basic foundation and implementation strategies of Responsiveness to Instruction (RtI). The training consists of a series of modules that cover the following topics: Problem-Solving; Functional Assessment; Instruction and Interventions in Reading, Math and Positive Behavior Support: School Presentations; Planning; and Resources.


Positive Behavior Support (PBIS)

PBIS training provides systematic and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behavior with all students. Training is conducted with school teams that are representative of the staff at their home schools. By training school teams in the principles and practices of PBIS, schools are able to design a system for teaching and encouraging respectful & responsible behaviors, use data to support decision making and continuous improvement, and create an individualized total school climate that supports staff and student behavior and encourages family engagement. The team attends three two-day-each modules to learn the information needed to begin PBIS implementation at their school. They assign team roles, determine effective data management strategies and begin to build a repertoire of behavior management skills. The team determines how to integrate the use of research-based behavior strategies in their school setting to decrease negative behaviors while increasing positive behaviors and student achievement. Reading Foundations
Kindergarten-12th, English Language Arts, DPI
Reading Foundations training was designed to introduce teachers to the knowledge, skills and procedures needed to provide effective instruction for students with persistent reading difficulties. The training is five days in length and is derived directly from the extensive research-based literature available on teaching students with severe reading difficulties. It reflects the findings of two National reports addressing the instructional needs of students with reading problems: Teaching Children to Read, a report of the National Reading Panel, and Preventing Reading Problems of Young Children, a report sponsored by the National Reading Council of the National Academy of Sciences.


Math Foundations
Kindergarten-12th, Mathematics, DPI
Math Foundations training provides a framework for providing instruction to students with mathematics difficulties. The training is five days in length and covers seven Components of Number Sense. It addresses teacher modeling, student verbal rehearsal of that modeling, and use of visuals or multiple representations to develop conceptual understanding. The research of Sharon Griffin, John Woodward, Liping Ma, Richard E. Mayer and the National Research Council have been used to develop the training and provide insight into instructional strategies that provide a framework for developing the Big Ideas of Mathematics.
