BUILDING A BODY OF KNOWLEDGE

A BIBLIOGRAPHY

In year 2000, The North Carolina Advisory Commission on Raising Achievement and Closing Gaps was appointed and embarked upon a yearlong intense study of achievement and educational equity issues. As a result, the Commission emerged with eleven recommendations.

Recommendation Eleven stated that a study be commissioned by the state to examine and profile the history of organized education for American Indians and African Americans in North Carolina. In an effort to continue to build a credible body of knowledge about these two cultures, the bibliographies that resulted identify resources in a variety of categories. The categories for Native American resources include: general information, economic climate, historical context, religious climate, schools, social climate, and teachers and teaching. The categories for African Americans include: civil rights, community, economic climate, historical context, political climate, religious aspects, segregated schools, social climate, teacher training, and teachers and teaching. These many resources document various aspects of issues that in some way impacted the education of African American and Native American children in North Carolina.
