LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

The goal of the professional development program is to improve students’ reading achievement; to enable teachers to implement research based reading programs, reading instruction, and reading-related practices; and to build reading leaders, coaches, and experts at the school and LEA levels. North Carolina Reads (NC Reads) is a professional development program completely aligned to Reading First.

Core Requirements

The core requirements of the professional development model are:

  • Research-based content
  • Effective learn-by-doing activities
  • Collaborative peer support
  • Coach facilitation
  • Classroom personalization
  • Extended across time
  • Technology enabled
  • Leadership supported

The content used in professional development will meet the Reading First legislation requirements. The content of the entire curriculum will be approximately 80 hours connected sequentially and target a core area and discrete set of skills.
