The mission of Research & Evaluation is to provide timely and accurate information needed by state decision makers (State Board of Education, Department of Public Instruction, local education agencies, and other state agencies) to maintain and improve North Carolina schools.

The Research & Evaluation function provides guidance, technical assistance, and support to the schools and LEAs in the areas of school safety, and alternative learning. This function is responsible for state administrative oversight of alternative education, crime and discipline issues, safe schools programs, and drug and tobacco use prevention. It is also responsible for the collection of crime, discipline, dropout, and alternative learning program roster data, for any needed analyses of these data, and for the production of related annual reports for the SBE, General Assembly, and federal government.
