APPLICATIONS AND ASSESSMENTS
The Safe and Drug Free Schools and
Communities Act
First authorized by the
United States Congress in 1986 and reauthorized in 2001 under the No Child
Left Behind Act (NCLB). The Act was written in response to high rates of
alcohol and drug use among school-aged children. The Act originally focused
on activities
related to the prevention of illicit drug use among the nation's youth. Since
its reauthorization as part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)
in 1994, the Act has expanded to include a focus on school safety.
The Super
Safe School Award (Triple S)
A
voluntary program established by the
Department of Public Instruction's School Improvement Division to recognize
public schools that make and extra effort to ensure the safety of students
and staff. The Triple S School Award Program reinforced the Board's Strategic
Priority to provide Safe, Orderly, and Caring Schools.
The Triple S School Award Program continues to provide and excellent way to recognize those schools that are striving hard to provide the optimum conditions for students and staff to learn and work in a safe school environment. To receive recognition as a Triple S School, each school is required to submit a portfolio documenting the safety measures they have enacted for observation and evaluation.
The
Assessment Screening Inventory for Safe, Orderly and Caring Schools
A tool
for use by schools to assess the safety of the school's external and
internal environments and for use in designing the school's safety plan.
This instrument is used as part of the Super Safe Schools Award evaluation
process
in addition to the process for evaluating schools at risk of being labeled
persistently dangerous, per NCLB.
