On Facebook, I've seen a number of people create little visual summaries of their year to share with friends. While I'm not going to invite you to revisit 2014 with me, I do want to invite you to reflect on the year that is drawing to a close. We have had important successes – the highest graduation rate ever and steps to address teacher pay, for example – and also continuing challenges. Throughout it all, I have appreciated your willingness to listen, to offer ideas and responses and to recognize that we all are striving to do our best on behalf of students in North Carolina.

I hope you have a holiday break that is joyful, merry and bright. I look forward to our work together in 2015.

NCDPI to Request Renewal of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Flexibility

The NCDPI is giving notice that it plans to submit a request to the US Department of Education to renew North Carolina's ESEA flexibility so that the state can continue to implement ESEA flexibility through the end of the 2018-19 school year. As part of the renewal process, North Carolina is proposing to incorporate a number of changes into its currently approved ESEA flexibility request. To find out what the department is proposing, as well as access a link to a copy of the current ESEA Flexibility Request for North Carolina that currently is in place through the 2014-15 school year, please visit The public has until Jan. 9 to comment on the department's renewal extension of ESEA Flexibility.

Multi-Tiered System of Support Readiness Instrument

On Oct. 28, you received a memo regarding North Carolina's rollout and strategic construction of a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). The next step in the statewide roll out of a MTSS is to complete a MTSS Readiness Instrument. The electronic link to the Readiness Instrument will be sent to curriculum and instruction directors, exceptional children directors, state operated program directors, and charter school directors in January. The purpose of this instrument is for districts to assess readiness for MTSS implementation. In completing the Readiness Instrument, input should include perspectives from multiple district leaders, such as curriculum specialists, instructional coaches, program coordinators, directors, assistant superintendents, and superintendents in order to gain a complete picture of your district's readiness for MTSS implementation.

Superintendent Vacancy Announced: Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Schools

The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Board of Education is seeking a superintendent to lead the school system in its continuing pursuit of excellence. Candidates must have or be qualified to hold a North Carolina superintendent license. Central office and building-level experience are preferred. A doctorate degree or progress toward a doctorate degree is preferred but not required. The individual chosen will be required to live in the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County School District. Seize the Data: Empowering Teachers to Create and Use Assessment and Measurement

his course opportunity has been shared with principals and teachers. This 18-week online course is taught by a North Carolina Center for Advancement in Teaching (NCCAT) Data Literacy Specialist and trained NC classroom teacher, and includes weekly assignments that are classroom-embedded and designed to help teachers reflect on the importance of data and how they collect, analyze and use it in their instruction. Teachers will gain a basic understanding of data literacy principles and be able to reflect on and improve existing classroom assessment practices and classroom data collection. Teachers should expect to spend 2-3 hours per week on course-related work. The course will earn 40 hours of credit equal to 4 CEUs. The course is available at no cost to North Carolina educators. Participants are expected to meet all weekly deadlines in order to receive CEUs. Partial credit will not be given. Registration is limited to 35 participants per section.
