TEACHERS' MESSAGES 2007

MESSAGES 2007 :: APRIL 26, 2007

APRIL 26, 2007 - Teachers' Biweekly Message

Spring is not the time of year when our thoughts typically turn to the flu. But, this year, the NC Department of Public Instruction, along with representatives from local school districts, is making plans for responses that would be necessary in the event of a pandemic flu outbreak. Pandemic flu is not the same as seasonal flu and could break out at any time of year. It is characterized by being a type of flu for which there is little or no immunity worldwide, a large percentage of people infected and a potentially high mortality rate. Pandemic flu evolves in 6-8 week waves and could last overall 12-18 months overall. There would be large potential impact on public schools because of possible widespread student dismissals. More information is being developed for you and your colleagues and will be provided as soon as possible. In the meantime, I encourage you to check out the Web site, http://www.pandemicflu.gov/. It has excellent information for individual preparation and understanding.

Regards,
June Atkinson
